E-Challan: your complete guide

Challan online check

In India, checking your E-Challan online is a straightforward process.

The government has made it easy for citizens to access their traffic violation details and pay fines through a few simple steps.

Whether you’ve received an E-Challan for speeding, wrong parking, or any other traffic offense, this step-by-step guide will help you navigate the process and ensure you remain compliant with traffic laws.

Step 1: Visit the Official E-Challan Website

The first step is to access the official E-Challan portal, which is managed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways or your respective state’s traffic police website.

The central platform is Parivahan, but many states and cities also have their own portals.

Here’s how to start:

  1. Open your web browser (Google Chrome, Safari, etc.).
  2. Type echallan.parivahan.gov.in in the address bar and hit enter.
  3. Once on the homepage, you’ll find various options related to E-Challan services.

Step 2: Choose the E-Challan Service Option

Once you are on the homepage of the E-Challan website, locate the option to “Check Challan Status” or similar.

This will allow you to view the details of any traffic violation registered against your vehicle.

  • Look for a button or menu labeled “Check Challan Status” or “E-Challan Status.”
  • Click on this option to proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Enter Your Required Details

After selecting the “Check Challan Status” option, you’ll need to provide specific details to pull up your E-Challan record.

There are typically three different ways to check your Challan, and you can choose the one that is most convenient for you:

  1. By Challan Number:
    • If you have already received a notification of your E-Challan and have the Challan number available, you can enter it here for quick access.
  2. By Vehicle Number:
    • If you don’t have the Challan number but know your vehicle’s registration number, you can use this method.
      • Enter your Vehicle Registration Number (for example, MH01AA1234).
      • You may also be required to enter the last four digits of your vehicle’s engine or chassis number for verification.
      • Click on the Get Detail button.
  3. By Driving License Number (DL Number):
    • If the violation is linked to your driving license, you can search for the E-Challan using your DL number.
      • Enter your Driving License Number.
      • Click on the Get Detail button.

Step 4: Review Your E-Challan Information

Once you’ve submitted your details, the system will display the current status of any pending E-Challans associated with your vehicle or driving license.

You will be able to see:

  • The date of the violation.
  • The type of traffic violation (e.g., speeding, signal jumping, etc.).
  • The location where the violation occurred.
  • The fine amount that is due.

Take a moment to review the details and confirm that the information is accurate.

Step 5: Proceed to Pay the E-Challan (If Applicable)

If your E-Challan is valid and there is a fine that needs to be paid, the next step is to proceed with payment.

You’ll see an option labeled “Pay Now” or “Pay Challan” next to the violation details. Follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Pay Now button.
  2. You will be redirected to a secure payment page where you can choose your preferred payment method.
    • Payment options include:
      • Credit/Debit Card
      • Net Banking
      • UPI (Unified Payment Interface)
  3. After selecting your payment method, enter the required payment details (card number, UPI ID, etc.).
  4. Confirm the payment and wait for the confirmation message.

Step 6: Receive Payment Confirmation

Once your payment is successful, you will receive a payment confirmation on the screen.

You will also have the option to download the payment receipt for your records.

In addition, a confirmation SMS or email may be sent to your registered mobile number or email ID.

  • Download the payment receipt and keep it as proof of payment in case any discrepancies arise in the future.
  • You can also revisit the E-Challan portal at any time to confirm that the payment has been processed and the violation is cleared from your record.

Step 7: Checking Your E-Challan Status Post-Payment

To verify that your E-Challan status has been updated post-payment, repeat Steps 1 to 3.

Upon entering your details again, the system should display a message indicating that no pending E-Challans are associated with your vehicle or driving license.
