E-Challan: your complete guide

Where to check E-Challan traffic

If you’ve committed a traffic violation in India, checking your E-Challan status online is a quick and convenient way to stay updated on any fines.

You can use various official platforms to verify traffic violations associated with your vehicle and driving license.

Below is a detailed, step-by-step guide on how to check your E-Challan status through the official government website or state-specific portals.

Step 1: Access the Official E-Challan Website

The most efficient way to check your E-Challan status is by visiting the official Parivahan E-Challan website, which is managed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Alternatively, you can check the traffic department websites for specific states if you are directed to do so.

  1. Open your web browser and go to the E-Challan Parivahan portal:
  2. You will land on the homepage, where you can see various E-Challan-related services.

Alternatively, if your traffic department has a separate platform, you can find state-specific links such as:

Step 2: Select the ‘Check Challan Status’ Option

Once you are on the Parivahan E-Challan homepage (or the state-specific traffic police website), look for the “Check Challan Status” option.

This is typically displayed in the main menu or as a prominent button on the homepage.

  • Click on “Check Challan Status” to proceed.

Step 3: Enter the Required Information

After selecting the Check Challan Status option, you will be directed to a form where you need to provide some specific details.

You have three options to check your E-Challan:

  1. Challan Number:
    • If you have already received a challan and want to check its status, you can directly enter the challan number.
  2. Vehicle Number:
    • If you don’t have a challan number but want to check for any pending challans against your vehicle, you can enter your vehicle’s registration number (e.g., MH01AA1234).
  3. Driving License Number (DL Number):
    • Alternatively, you can check for E-Challans linked to your driving license by entering your DL number.

Step 4: Enter Verification Code

Once you’ve entered the required details, there will be a Captcha or Verification Code displayed on the screen.

Enter the code correctly to proceed.

  • Click on “Get Detail” or “Submit” once you’ve entered the details and the verification code.

Step 5: View Your E-Challan Traffic Status

After submitting the information, the system will display the current status of your E-Challan.

You will be able to see the following details:

  • Date of violation:
    • The date on which the traffic violation was recorded.
  • Violation description:
    • What the violation was, such as speeding, parking in a no-parking zone, or signal jumping.
  • Fine amount:
    • The total fine imposed for the violation.
  • Location of violation:
    • Where the incident occurred (the exact location or area may be mentioned).

If there are no pending challans, the system will notify you that there are “No Challans Found” for your vehicle or driving license.

Step 6: Download or Print the E-Challan (If Necessary)

Once you have reviewed the status of your E-Challan, you can download or print the challan for your records, especially if you need to make the payment later or keep proof of the traffic violation for future reference.

  • Look for the option to Download Challan or Print Challan, usually available at the bottom of the page.

If you choose to pay the E-Challan right away, you can click the Pay Now button and proceed with the payment (detailed in the next section).

Other Ways to Check E-Challan Status

In addition to the official Parivahan portal, there are other methods you can use to check your E-Challan status depending on the city or state you are in.

Here are some alternatives:

1. SMS Notifications

In many cases, you will receive an SMS notification on your registered mobile number when an E-Challan is issued.

The SMS will include details of the violation and a link or reference number that can be used to check or pay the challan online.

  • Simply follow the instructions provided in the SMS to check your E-Challan status.

2. Mobile Apps

Some states offer mobile applications for traffic services.

You can download these apps on your smartphone to check your E-Challan status. For example:

  • Delhi Traffic Police App
  • Mumbai Traffic Police App
  • MParivahan App (Central Government)

To use the app:

  1. Download the app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  2. Register your mobile number or vehicle number.
  3. Use the “Check Challan Status” feature within the app.

3. Traffic Police Kiosks

In some cities, you can visit traffic police kiosks located across different areas to inquire about your E-Challan status in person.

These kiosks often have self-service machines where you can check your challan status by entering your vehicle number or DL number.
