How to pay road tax online

Paying road tax online in India is a convenient and straightforward process, allowing vehicle owners to handle payments without the hassle of visiting an RTO (Regional Transport Office) in person. This guide outlines the step-by-step process to pay road tax online through the Vahan Parivahan portal, ensuring a smooth experience. Let’s walk through the detailed steps to pay your road tax online.

Step 1: Visit the Official Vahan Parivahan Website

  • Go to the official Vahan Parivahan portal. This site is managed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and is the primary platform for all vehicle-related services, including road tax payment.

Step 2: Click on “Online Services”

  • On the homepage, navigate to the “Online Services” section in the main menu.
  • A dropdown menu will appear, displaying various options related to vehicle registration and taxation.

Step 3: Select “Vehicle Related Services”

  • Click on “Vehicle Related Services” from the dropdown menu. This option will redirect you to a new page where you can access services like road tax payment, vehicle registration details, and more.

Step 4: Choose Your State

  • You will be asked to select your State and RTO (Regional Transport Office) from a list. Choose the state where your vehicle is registered, as road tax is paid based on the state-specific regulations.
  • After selecting your state, the website will automatically redirect you to the appropriate RTO’s portal or the national Vahan service, depending on your location.

Step 5: Enter Your Vehicle Registration Number

  • You will now see a form asking for your Vehicle Registration Number (e.g., MH12AB1234). Make sure to enter it exactly as it appears on your Registration Certificate (RC).
  • This step helps the system identify your vehicle and pull up the relevant tax details.

Step 6: Enter the Last Five Digits of the Chassis Number

  • You will also be prompted to enter the last five digits of your vehicle’s chassis number. This can be found on your RC or other vehicle documents.
  • The chassis number is required for verification purposes to ensure that only the authorized owner can access and pay for the vehicle.

Step 7: View Tax Details

  • After entering the required information, click on “Proceed”.
  • The portal will display your tax details, including the amount due, type of tax, and the due date. Review this information carefully to confirm the amount and avoid overpayment.

Step 8: Choose “Pay Your Tax”

  • Click on “Pay Your Tax” to proceed with the payment.
  • This will redirect you to a secure payment gateway where you can select your preferred payment method.

Step 9: Select the Payment Method

  • Choose from various payment options such as Net Banking, Credit Card, Debit Card, or UPI. Ensure you are using a secure network connection while entering sensitive information.
  • Enter your payment details and complete the transaction.

Step 10: Download and Print the Receipt

  • Once the payment is successful, a digital receipt will be generated.
  • Download the receipt and keep a copy for your records. It is advisable to print a hard copy as proof of payment in case it is needed for future reference or vehicle inspections.
