RTO Vehicle: Vehicle information and status

How to RTO vehicle number search

Performing an RTO vehicle number search allows you to retrieve essential details about a vehicle, including its owner, registration status, and other key information.

This is particularly useful when you want to verify a vehicle’s details before buying a second-hand car, checking ownership details in case of an accident, or ensuring that a vehicle is legally registered.

This step-by-step guide will walk you through how to perform an RTO vehicle number search online using India’s Parivahan Sewa portal.

Step 1: Visit the Parivahan Sewa Portal

The first step is to access the official portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Parivahan Sewa.

This is the go-to platform for various RTO-related services, including vehicle number searches.

Once you are on the homepage, you’ll see multiple options related to vehicle and driver services.

This portal is the official channel for accessing RTO vehicle data in India.

Step 2: Navigate to ‘Know Your Vehicle Details’

From the homepage, locate the section dedicated to vehicle information.

  • In the top navigation bar, click on ‘Online Services’.
  • From the dropdown list, select ‘Know Your Vehicle Details’. This option will take you to the page where you can enter a vehicle’s registration number to retrieve its details.

This service allows you to search any registered vehicle in India by using its registration number.

Step 3: Enter the Vehicle’s Registration Number

To search for a vehicle, you’ll need its full registration number.

Ensure that you have the correct details before proceeding.

  • In the field labeled ‘Enter Registration Number’, type the vehicle’s complete registration number. This typically includes the state code, district code, and the vehicle’s unique number (e.g., MH12AB1234).
  • Ensure there are no spaces or errors while entering the registration number, as even a small mistake can result in an incorrect search result.

Step 4: Verify the Captcha

To proceed, you will be required to complete a simple captcha verification.

  • Enter the captcha code displayed on the screen to confirm that you are a human user and not a bot.
  • If the captcha is difficult to read, you can click the ‘Refresh’ button to generate a new one.

This step is essential for ensuring security on the platform.

Step 5: Submit the Vehicle Search Request

Once you’ve entered the correct registration number and captcha code, click the ‘Submit’ button.

The system will process your request and search the vehicle’s data in the RTO database.

This step usually takes a few seconds, so wait until the page fully loads.

Step 6: View the Vehicle Details

After submitting the request, the portal will display the complete details associated with the vehicle registration number you entered.

This information will typically include:

  • Registration Number:
    • The vehicle’s official registration number.
  • Owner’s Name:
    • The name of the individual or entity under which the vehicle is registered.
  • Make and Model:
    • The vehicle’s manufacturer and model details.
  • Engine and Chassis Number:
    • Key identification numbers of the vehicle.
  • Registration Date:
    • The exact date when the vehicle was registered at the RTO.
  • Registration Validity:
    • Information about the validity of the registration, including any expiry dates.
  • Insurance and Fitness Status:
    • For commercial vehicles, this may include fitness certificate details and insurance expiry dates.

Step 7: Save or Print the Vehicle Details

Once you have the necessary vehicle details, you may want to save or print the information for future reference.

  • You can save the page as a PDF or take a screenshot to store the details on your device.
  • Alternatively, use the print function in your browser to keep a hard copy, especially if you’re buying a second-hand vehicle or need proof of ownership.

Step 8: Verify and Use the Information

After viewing the vehicle details, you can verify the information to ensure it matches the records provided by the seller or any other relevant party.

  • If you are using this information for a vehicle purchase, compare the engine and chassis numbers with the physical vehicle to confirm authenticity.
  • Make sure that the insurance and registration status are up to date.

Step 9: Logout and Clear Browser Data (Optional)

If you’ve used a shared or public computer to search for vehicle details, it’s good practice to logout from the Parivahan Sewa portal and clear your browser history to protect sensitive vehicle information.
